Jules Guerin's Egypt

One of the most sublime realisations of orientalist Egypt is found in the illustrations of American artist Jules Vallee Guerin in the book Egypt & Its Monuments text by Robert Hitchens. Guerin was best known as a muralist and architectural illustrator based in Chicago, but he travelled the Near East with Hitchens between 1909 and 1911. See a selection of his Egyptian illustrations below.

I have had the opportunity to peruse an original copy of this book. The text is undistinguished, but the illustrations by Guerin are wonderful. He captures the epic timelessness of Egypt.

Guerin learned his art by painting theatre backdrops. He was a major American muralist - his works include a mural in the Lincoln Memorial.
